Created for Southern Highlands Matters Inc. by superlunar.xyz and a team of local collaborators, the film Little Plastics was made using a mix of gen-ai, hand tools and hand-retouched models.
The campaign references the controversy around the building of the RePoly plastics reprocessing facility, which would be one of the largest in Australia and could lead to pollution affecting air quality and Sydney's drinking water.
Based on a quote from RePoly, that residents could manage living near the plant by ‘minimising time spent outdoors’, the quirky stop-motion styled film has a darkly cynical undertone in its visualisation of how an idyllic highlands outdoor lifestyle would look like under the shadow of such a facility.
“Like anyone, we support recycling. But building a potentially toxic plastics plant in an area that feeds Sydney’s water supply, upstream from a federal platypus conservation project, in a working food bowl, near schools, daycare centres and right next door to a cancer research facility? That didn’t sit very well with us.” said Ben Pearce, Creative Director at Superlunar.
Earlier this year the Independent Planning Commission (IPC) rejected RePoly, formerly Plasrefine's, state-government backed project, but the IPC's decision is now being appealed in the Land and Environment Court.
