On My Radar: Jerry Chia
Jerry Chia, editor at Good Company NYC, reveals the music video maestro whose work he looks out for, the film he thinks is a 'masterpiece', and the reason he's actually called Jerry.
What is the most creative advertising idea you’ve seen recently?
The most recent one I saw was for UberEats. I loved their tagline for the campaign 'Get your Uber Eats and Uber Don’t Eats'. I love how they cast actors like Nicholas Braun, Jennifer Coolidge, Trevor Noah, and Gwyneth Paltrow eating actual objects that you can get through the app. The video kicks off with Jennifer Coolidge saying “If it was delivered through UberEats, does that mean I can 'eats' it?” And the edits begin going through each different home as they try the objects they ordered. I love the Goop candle scene with Gwyneth Paltrow. It was hilarious as she took a bite of the candle.

What website(s) do you use most regularly?
I love watching new music video releases on YouTube. New videos usually drop on Fridays so, oftentimes, I try to set aside an hour or so in my day to get visual inspiration from fresh music video content. My favourite music videos are directed by Anton Tammi, who did The Weeknd [After Hours] and Halsey [Graveyard]. The style of his videos is always so visually pleasing with the editing and lighting.
What’s the most recent piece of tech that you’ve bought?
I have the latest 16” MacBook Pro, with the M1 Max chip. It’s such a beast and has been a lifesaver for me! Especially the retina display and the performance speed have made Premiere Pro editing sessions so much smoother.
What product could you not live without?
I am always on my iPhone, either on instagram for visual inspiration, or laughing away on the endless scroll of TikTok, or just messaging and chatting with others. I’m definitely due for an upgrade, but I have the iPhone 10Max and it's still holding up quite nicely.
What’s the best film you’ve seen over the last year?
I’ve been more into TV shows than films lately. With streaming, there are so many new TV series on a regular basis, so I love finding a new show to binge on the weekends. A great show is Genera+ion. I love the way the series was edited, allowing you to see the story unfold from each different character's perspective. Zelda and Daniel Barnz did a great job with the representation of LGBTQ youth. The show had such an amazing and diverse group of characters with beautifully layered stories.
What film do you think everyone should have seen?
Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar is a masterpiece. I saw this film in the movie theatre when it came out in 2014. It was such a beautiful film, from the epic score by Hanz Zimmer, to the brilliant casting, to the incredible CGI. I love the concept of time and space where the protagonist needed to travel back in time in order to save the world/prevent some events. The story was very well written and the cinematography was stunning. Jessica Chastain and Matthew McConaughey as their father and daughter bond is like no other.
What’s your preferred social media platform?
Instagram: There are so many works being released through social media and it's a great way to pull inspiration and connect with others in various industries on that platform.
What’s your favourite TV show?
Euphoria is by far my favourite with the ensemble cast, editing, storytelling, even the makeup and costumes. The series has been a huge reference with commercial clients that I worked with.
What’s your favorite podcast?
I love my friend’s podcast: Beyond with Mike Kelton. The podcast is about him trying to solve his real life problems via supernatural means. His positive energy spills through the audio and it's so interesting yet funny to learn about mediums, ghost hunters and astrologers through his comedic storytelling.
What show/exhibition has most inspired you recently?
I’m a huge Broadway fan. I recently saw Moulin Rouge, Hadestown, and Slave Play within the last couple of months. All were amazingly done, but Moulin Rouge inspired me the most. The set design by Derek McLane was beautifully executed. Quick and thoughtful set changes always fascinate me, and his vision for the set of Moulin Rouge was no exception. It was so scenic and well designed.
If you could only listen to one music artist from now on, who would it be?
Taylor Swift. Yes, I am a Swiftie at heart. Her music has always hit me in some type of way, ever since I was a kid. I could listen to her songs 24/7. She’s always my Spotify Wrapped top artist.
If there was one thing you could change about the advertising industry, what would it be?
It would be for beauty commercials to take more editing risks. I believe that faster pace edits and dynamic energy will capture the viewer's attention across the commercial. A lot of the beauty brands stick to their standard formula of beauty shots mixed in with a lot of product shots. Though I have started to notice that they are taking the risk to push for different approaches with mixed media, but they can push a bit further.
Who or what has most influenced your career?
I would say director and editor Alexander Hammer has been the most influential in my career. I went to Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) for Film and Television and, during my senior year, Alex visited our class to give a lecture about working in the film industry. I was immediately incredibly inspired by his talent and the projects he has worked on. He presented some of his editorial work – Beyonce’s Lemonade and Taylor Swift's 1989 tour film – to the class and I was in awe. After that lecture, I cold emailed him and that is how I began working closely with him in my current full-time editing role at Good Company, where I’ve been since 2016. I consider Alex a close mentor and I’m always so thankful for that lecture which gave me the drive to push for my film career.
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know.
Most people don’t know that I chose my very own nickname, 'Jerry'. I was born in Taipei, Taiwan and I moved to Richmond, Virginia with my family when I was seven-years-old. Growing up in the South, I noticed that many people couldn’t pronounce my given name, Hao-Hung, correctly. I watched a lot of American cartoons when I was learning English and, as a result, I chose Jerry because I identified with the mouse from the TV Show, Tom and Jerry, who was witty, smart and a little mischievous.
