Marc Sidelsky: A Few Of My Favourite Things
Knucklehead director Marc Sidelsky [left, pictured with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta] reveals the posters, playlists and pitch notes that keep his imagination firing.
I’ve always been a late-night worker. Producers and researchers will be very familiar with receiving written treatments and feedback from me in the wee hours.
I love the silence of the night - it just feels like the time my brain flickers alive.
Therefore, my workspace has always been a place where I can retreat, immerse myself in the work, and surround myself with my favourite things.
The Tape Deck and Mondo Poster
My biggest passion outside of filmmaking and music is Arsenal Football Club.
My late dad was a top amateur player - he broke the same leg seven times in this pursuit - and he worked in the electronics industry.
When I was in primary school, he worked for JVC, and that’s where the love affair with the Gunners began.
I still have this double cassette deck from my childhood.
For me, it’s both a beautiful sculptural piece and a father-son photo.
Behind it is a Bonnie and Clyde poster from MONDO.
For many years, I was obsessed with posters from MONDO.
It was a company from Austin, linked to the Alamo Drafthouse Chain, that commissioned world-class illustrators and designers to do their own interpretations of film posters.
They’re all numbered, and I love this one.
The Blu-ray Collection
To say I’m a film geek is a massive understatement.
I’m not a snob - I watch everything.
Genius and inspiration are everywhere.
I’ve always been a collector of physical media, starting with a gigantic DVD collection that later shifted into Blu-rays.
Whenever I start working on a pitch, I begin to collect references, mentally pooling ideas.
I love pulling out films and curating a little film festival that can play in the background as I brainstorm and write.
The Spike Lee Figure
One of my biggest filmmaking heroes has always been Spike Lee.
I’ve always loved how he mixes drama and humour, makes social statements wrapped in visceral entertainment, and his use of colour and music.
He just commits and jumps in with both feet.
He’s also tireless - still going strong.
And… he’s a huge Arsenal fan!
The Gunners Gear
Being an Arsenal fan, it’s been a dream come true to shoot for the club.
Shooting amazing, award-winning work is indescribable.
Working with Creative Director Josh Steele has been one of the most creatively fulfilling relationships I’ve had, or expect to ever have.
Making work like we have, for a brand we adore, is what this job is all about.
I’ve been spoilt, but I don’t take it for granted.
All we have to do now is win the league - I don’t think that’s too greedy.
The Piles Of Paper
I love working on loose paper - scribbling, badly sketching.
I hoard all the PPM, tech recce and casting documents throughout a job.
I pile them high on my desk, pull out the staples, flip them to the blank side and get working.
Another superstition of mine is that I keep all the notes and lists until the job is stripped.
The Cereal Box
I don’t have that many props from set, but this one I love - the cereal box we created for my Shelflife Stussy x Nike film.
It was a special job for me, a key career springboard, and deeply personal.
I wrote in my beloved dog Teddy, who’s since passed.
My brother, a dentist, has a cameo, and it was a statement of who I am as a filmmaker.
Special note: more MONDO posters in the background - Moon and Scott Pilgrim vs The World - both by Martin Ansin.
