What’s the most creative advertising idea you’ve seen recently?

The DFS ad Thingception is a refreshing return to stylised and creative advertising that hooks you in the first few seconds. It’s a paradox that, right now, brands and clients are playing it safe while at the same time wanting to lean into social media and go viral. Social media is all about hooking you quickly, and we aren’t seeing that much anymore in the broadcast space.

What website(s) do you use most regularly?

I use YouTube quite a bit, to look up tutorials on things like how to change the air filters in my car or replace my faucets. It’s opened my eyes to how many things around the house are easy to DIY.

What’s the most recent piece of tech that you’ve bought?

I just bought a DJI RS 4 Mini Gimbal because I love to shoot my own videos, but I have the gait of a baby giraffe.

What product could you not live without?

It’s not a product, but I could not live without art – music, films, painting, books – The recent cuts to funding and grants to museums, PBS, and artistic endeavours are devastating. Art is culture. What would we be without it?

What’s the best film you’ve seen over the last year?

The Substance. That was a wild ride.

What film do you think everyone should have seen?

City of God. It’s beautiful. Each act is its own little movie that fits together seamlessly.

What’s your preferred social media platform?

I love Instagram. There’s so much creativity to be found there and, right now, it’s a wild frontier.

What’s your favourite TV show?

I would love to find another show as good as or better than Breaking Bad. It was perfect.

What’s your favourite podcast?

Snap Judgement’s Spooked

What have you been most inspired by recently?

I took a watercolour painting class recently and, as a perfectionist, it was maddening. You have to trust that the paint and water will do their own thing while you move on to another section. But I loved the finished work. It inspired me to let go a little and let things happen on their own.

If you could only listen to one music artist from now on, who would it be?

Willie Nelson. He has an extensive catalog, so it would take a long time to get through it, and I could still go two-stepping.

If there was one thing you could change about the advertising industry, what would it be?

It would be for brands to embrace attention-grabbing originality and trust their creative partners to deliver that.

Who or what has most influenced your career?

My mentor, Executive Creative Producer, Ron Rendon. He hired me as an intern in college and, after graduating, brought me on in the tape room. He’s given me invaluable guidance and encouraged me every step of my career for decades now.

What scares you the most?

Gory torture movies.

What makes you happiest?

Being with my family.

Tell us one thing about yourself that most people wouldn’t know.

I’m a lucid dreamer.
