What's the most creative advertising idea you've seen recently?

I thought Legora's brand campaign with Jude Law was tight and super-fun. It's so ironic it almost kills the credibility it's trying to convey — yet, by being so cool and comically self-aware, it gets away with it in this laid-back, elegant, stylish way. Everything lands perfectly. I also recently discovered the Belgian PSA, Equal Pay Day. Not new, but some of the best shit I've seen in a while. Absolutely loved it.

What website(s) do you use most regularly?

I check the weather every day, though I should probably say Making Sense with Sam Harris or something smart like that. I'm also obsessed with chess and spend way too much time on chess.com. I'm trying to quit.

What's the most recent piece of tech that you've bought?

As a director and editor, I've been using Higgsfield a lot — trying to figure out how to meaningfully integrate AI into my work, and what my role looks like going forward. What do I need to know about prompting in order to direct others, and what do I actually need to master myself? It's genuinely fun and inspiring when you get your hands dirty, but also very time-consuming.

What product could you not live without?

Coffee, obviously — which is why a favourite project was my coffee film for Paulig [above]. It's essentially a portrait of our collective addiction and how most of us are quite ironically aware of it. It was so fun because it's simply true, and the response was overwhelming. Everyone loves that film.

What's the best film you've seen over the last year?

Wim Wenders' Perfect Days moved me deeply. On most days it would be too slow for my temperament, but somehow it went straight to my heart. It represents quite the opposite of my life — always moving, trying to stay connected with everything and everyone. This film quietly reminded me what's actually essential, and how important it is to stay grounded and grateful for the simple things. Everything else is just noise. I struggle with it bit I really try work to be content and grateful for a basic life.

What film do you think everyone should have seen?

Everyone? That's tough. Maybe Léon: The Professional. I love how simple it is, yet what a complex portrait of love. Nowadays it's controversial, but it's one of those films you can watch as a kid and read one way, and as an adult read it completely differently — like a fable that morphs to speak to whoever's watching.

What's your preferred social media platform?

None of my friends use it anymore, but I genuinely loved Snapchat. For someone who lives and breathes visual storytelling, it was such a fun way to communicate — raw, in the moment. For a visual perfectionist like me, that constraint was actually very playful and liberating.

What's your favourite TV show?

True Detective, Season One. I can always watch it one more time. The characters and their dynamic are just phenomenally fascinating.

What's your favourite podcast?

When I'm not deep in advertising, I do yoga, breathwork, and general self-development stuff. Such a cliché, I know — I guess I'm balancing things out. But someone like Sam Harris genuinely makes me feel like I'm getting smarter, which I appreciate.

What have you been most inspired by recently?

I'm an extremely curious person, which is great — except I find far too many things interesting. It's humanly impossible to keep up with all of it, and that makes me scatterbrained. I've been making a real effort to simplify and accept that I can't follow everything. Ironically, that's made me more inspired by the things I do focus on. Less really is more.

If you could only listen to one music artist from now on, who would it be?

That’s an impossible question! I generally prefer instrumental music, and tend to lock into a mood for hours, days, or even weeks. I'm currently in a year-long phase of male church choirs and everything with hang drum. But if I have to pick one — Jackson C. Frank.

If there was one thing you could change about the advertising industry, what would it be?

It should be illegal to have directors pitch for free. We pour enormous work into every pitch, and you can pitch yourself to death without making a dime. It's not right, and I think it's a genuine driver of mental health issues in the industry. Germany is starting to change that model — the rest of the world should follow, although it wont. It would be a more sustainable lifestyle. It’s real work and we dont even get minimum wage like anyone else.

Who or what has most influenced your career?

Early on I kept making spec commercials, trying to define my style — they were fine but not great, so I eventually stopped trying to predict what I was and just gave myself time to make music videos and personal projects. My style emerged on its own, and that's still an ongoing process. I was always told to position myself as a specific type of director to be easier to sell, and I understand the logic — but it never worked for me. I just go with the flow. I used to avoid humour because I thought I was more of a visual director. Then my Power film happened, and now two out of three boards coming my way involve wacky comedy. I didn't plan that.

What scares you the most?

Directing is probably one of the most fun jobs in the world — and also one of the hardest and most competitive. It's incredibly difficult to maintain any kind of balance between family, rest and routine. I don't see myself doing this forever, but I don't know what else I'd do, and I don't really want to do anything else. Not knowing how I'll eventually bridge out of this strange and wonderful career — that scares me.

What makes you happiest?

I'm a big hiking and camping person. When I'm out in wild nature, I specifically look west-facing lake spots to setup camp, so I can watch the sun go down into the water while drinking fancy wine from a plastic camping cup. Pure bliss.

Tell us one thing about yourself that most people wouldn't know.

I’m older than I look, and I always think that people are older than me. I still feel like a kid. It’s irrational but a big part of me refuses to grow old an wise. I still think everything is possible and that I can do anything, but I know thats not true anymore… or is it?
