Shooting through Dark Energy Films and Craft for McCann Manchester, Greg Bray has crafted a comically curious film for Aldi following the exploits of Mary, a senior citizen with a penchant for grabbing the store’s Special Buys that drop twice a week.
Aided by her mobility scooter, Mary brings home a mahoosive ‘middle-aisle madness’ haul of random essentials – from pizza ovens to an inflatable octopus – causing her oddball neighbour Derek some consternation. The scene is pleasingly bizarre with a lush grade by colourist Sarah Salzmann at MAP Berlin.
The director comments: “We shot this in a rare 22 degree Celsius heatwave, in a small village on the outskirts of Manchester – in a quirky street where the average age was 90 years old. The location was bang on brief – a small cul-de-sac of quaint ‘70s bungalows with highly manicured front gardens. Casting memorable characters was key here, and working with the amazingly talented casting director, Emma Garrett, always pays off.”
