AI can be an especially powerful tool for creating films in situations when live-action production isn't an option; this captivating story depicting Ukraine’s recent Operation Spiderweb is a compelling case in point.
Directed by Samir Mallal through his new studio OneDay, The Decisive Moment: Spiders in the Sky is a five-minute short film offering a dramatised take on the recent covert operation in which hundreds of drones carried out coordinated strikes on five Russian air bases.
It was made using Veo3, OpenAI’s Sora and MidJourney, with Mallal feeding in images of the mission shared in the Ukrainian press. Infused with a cinematic, spy-thriller flair, the film’s dark and realistic visuals add a visceral, human weight to a story we might otherwise only hear about through news headlines.
