Co-directed by Carlos Acosta and James Mackel through LOTUMN for American rapper Doechii’s new track, Denial Is A River, this punchy promo blends 90s sitcom nostalgia with impactful and personal storytelling.
Opening with a simplistic, grainy shot reminiscent of TV shows of the past, the film sees the rapper relaying a darkly comedic story about her personal life and the evolution of her music career, while a motley crew of characters join her on set to play out the events in her lyrics.
Midway, the film seamlessly transitions from lo-fi shots to cinematic storytelling, as Doechii grapples with her insecurities in a playful back-and-forth conversation with an unseen narrator. The promo is an energetic fusion of visual throwbacks, cleverly choreographed scenes and an endearing balance of humour and emotional vulnerability from the artist.
