Charity BBC Children in Need, JD Sports and Uncommon have worked with Andrea Arnold, rapper Daniel Chenjerai (DC3) and young people across the UK to create a campaign to drive awareness of the crucial role of youth clubs.
More than 1,200 youth club facilities have closed across the UK since 2010, removing vital spaces where young people can connect and express themselves.
The initiative comprises The Youth Club Dictionary – the first of its kind to preserve alternative definitions of words spoken in these clubs. Bringing the dictionary to life, MOBO-winning rapper DC3 (Daniel Chenjerai) has created My Home, a track inspired by the language of the young and his own experiences attending youth clubs.
Directing through Park Pictures, Andrea Arnold has created a simple but sensitive video for the track that depicts these spaces as important havens of safety, self-expression and belonging.
The 26 words and phrases within the pocket dictionary have been extracted from eight different youth club focus groups. Each one is shared alongside emotive anecdotes from the sessions, and true dictionary definitions provided by Oxford University Press.
