When it comes to football, and the World Cup in particular, it seems fandom cannot be confined to the heart and soul of the supporter. Instead, it must be plastered on all exterior surfaces.

Celebrating this joyful display is the BBC Creative’s Let’s Make It Iconic film for the Beeb's upcoming coverage, in which scarves, enamel badges, flags, drums, face paint and bobbleheads are turned into ‘fanvases’, where past legends and future stars collide.

Corralled by Blinkink’s Nicos Livesey and illustrator Dan Evans, the film leans heavily into the practical side of things, enlisting the talents of stop-motion animators, enamel badge makers and even knitting experts to provide a wonderfully tactile watch.

“It’s one of the most technical shoots we’ve ever taken on," explains Livesey. "With complex transitions, every object behaves differently and that’s the magic! The imperfections, the fingerprints, the texture are what make it feel alive.”

Tom Espezel, Creative Director at BBC Creative adds, “In a landscape of AI it felt more important than ever to focus on craft and celebrate the effort that goes into every expression of fandom.”

Backed by Somewhere Else by Tomora, the collaboration between Aurora and Tom Rowlands of The Chemical Brothers, the smartly entertaining promo uses football’s star power as a springboard rather than the central purpose, leaving the spotlight to the scarf-waving faithful.
