Blinkink director James Papper has teamed up with Uncommon Creative Studio and Colony to create a new Halloween campaign for Supercell’s Clash Royale, combining live action with CGI to create a film that channels the energy of an old-school Halloween stop-motion.

Titled The Last 1%, the film was created to celebrate the reveal of Clash Royale’s brand-new season, Shocktober. Jumping between the real world and the games universe, it follows a live-action player racing against the clock as their battery drops to its final 1%, while familiar characters including Electro Wizard and the Royale King battle to save the day.

The creative challenge for Papper and the crew was to make a CGI film that genuinely captured the tactility, imperfections and charm of old school stop-motion. Drawing inspiration from the nostalgic look and feel of 90s and early-00s animation, particularly the likes of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, the team created a deliberately handcrafted world, filled with crooked sets, dramatic silhouettes, cinematic camera movement and practical-feeling effects.

Papper says: “I loved working on this project. The original scripts and concepts from Uncommon Creative Studio were great and I was given loads of creative freedom to add on top of what they had already created. I drew inspiration from old 80s/90s family horror (Beetlejuice, The Addams Family) and threw in some early 00s teen horror (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, witchcraft etc). I loved shooting in a wild location and everyone we worked with was amazing. This is one of those jobs you leave feeling energized and ready to get onto the next one!”
