Research Arts’ creative reboot

Helmed by director and creative technologist Research Arts, represented by Studio Private, this mesmerising short film, titled Automatic, demonstrates how emerging technologies can be thoughtfully integrated into the creative process.  

The almost three-minute film features a surreal and hypnotic sequence of robots, with an intentional focus on form and movement. What started off as a self-initiated exploration of machine aesthetics evolved into an opportunity for Research Arts to rethink the relationship between creativity and new tools.  

Rather than using entirely AI-generated imagery, the director used AI during moments of experimentation and ideation to discover unexpected forms, which were then rebuild and refined and directed through traditional CGI.  

"Technology can generate endless possibilities, but it can't replace artistic judgement. For us at Studio Private, often the exciting part is using these tools to uncover forms we wouldn't otherwise have imagined. We are able to bring an element of creativity from the onset when working with global brand’s visions, applying craft to turn those discoveries into something original and authentic,” said Bianca Redgrave, MD at Studio Private.
