On My Radar: Victoria Rivera
SLMBR PRTY director Victoria Rivera on the creative opportunities of an empty notebook, a recent film with a "perfect" ending, and why, in TV, there's B.S. and A.S.
What’s the most creative advertising idea you’ve seen recently?
I’m always excited to see anything Kim Gehrig creates. There’s such a genuine sense of joy in her work, and her command of storytelling and rhythm is so inspiring — it’s always a treat to watch. I recently saw her Apple spot with Mando, and absolutely loved it. The way the shots progress, the playful framing, the music and that perfect payoff — it feels like a complete little film all on its own.

What website(s) do you use most regularly?
All things short film – Vimeo, Short of the Week, Directors Library, and 1.4. I love watching bite-sized films that take risks, surprise, and inspire new ideas.
What’s the most recent piece of tech that you’ve bought?
An analog alarm clock so I can get my phone out of my room at night.
What product could you not live without?
A plain notebook, preferably a Moleskine, for all things pen to paper – note taking, idea jotting, shot listing, sketching, writing, ripping…

What’s the best film you’ve seen over the last year?
Sean Baker’s Anora was easily one of my favourites last year. His films are always so fun and full of heart. It felt like a wild ride I didn’t want to end, and it gave us a glimpse into a part of New York that rarely gets the spotlight. Mikey Madison gave her all and delivered an incredible performance — she brought so much depth to the role, and it all builds up to what I’d honestly call a perfect ending.
What film do you think everyone should have seen?
La Chimera, by Alice Rohrwacher, released in 2023, didn’t get nearly enough love, in my opinion. Her films have a of sweeping you up, making you believe in the impossible, and somehow restoring your faith in humanity — something we could all use a little more of right now.

What’s your preferred social media platform?
WhatsApp, hands down. With close friends and my entire family spread across different time zones, it’s the one place where I get all my favourite people through group chats, voice notes, photos and video calls.
What’s your favourite TV show?
In my mind, there is B.S. and A.S. (Before Sopranos and After Sopranos). Each episode is a masterclass in storytelling. It changed the game entirely and opened the way for all the greats that came after: Breaking Bad, Succession, Boardwalk Empire, Mad Men…

What’s your favourite podcast?
After listening to season one of Serial and becoming completely absorbed with Adnan Syed’s story and Sarah Koenig's approach to it, I’ll listen to anything and everything Serial Productions puts out.
What show/exhibition has most inspired you recently?
The Justice show at the Brooklyn Navy Yard last summer has to take the cake. A feast for the ears and the senses.
If you could only listen to one music artist from now on, who would it be?
I’m fully in my Kali Uchis era, putting it out to the universe que amaría trabajar con ella <3

If there was one thing you could change about the advertising industry, what would it be?
I wish more brands were willing to take creative risks and fully trust their creative teams — both agency and production. More and more scripts are extensively audience-tested and reduced to rigid 2D animatics, leaving little room for fresh ideas or creative exploration. Instead of simply recreating what's been pre-approved, there’s an opportunity to craft something truly new and unexpected that can leave a lasting impact.
Who or what has most influenced your career?
My film community and peers have always influenced me. Seeing their passion and creativity fuels my own, and there's nothing more motivating than being surrounded by people who challenge you to be better while cheering you on every step of the way.
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know.
I’m an avid diver, and I love using diving as an excuse to explore new places. It’s the perfect way to experience the world from a totally different perspective — both above and below the surface.
