Playlist: The Reggies
Strike Anywhere's directing duo The Reggies (aka Jake Herman and Clay Dirkse) give us the lowdown on evil vertical video, wanting to make abstract and conceptual work for artists, and dethroning Joey Chestnut...
What’s the best music video you’ve seen recently and why?
Phoebe Bridgers - Lost Boys, directed by Lance Oppenheim and Pablo Rochat.
There’s always a handful of videos we’ll watch and say, “I wish we did that,” and this was definitely one of those. So obscure and well done.

What’s the first music video you remember being impressed by?
Clay: My older siblings introduced me to music & music videos. Probably the 2009/2010 era of Eminem / D12 videos.
Jake: I accidentally purchased the Outkast - Hey Ya! music video on iTunes when I was 12, and it blew my mind. At the time, I had no concept of compositing and could not fathom how there were so many different Andre 3000s in one frame. I figured they were identical twins in some quadruplet situation.

What’s your favourite bit of tech, whether for professional or personal use?
Jake: Airtags, no doubt. I used to lose my keys and wallet frequently, but now with the help of Apple’s cutting-edge technology, I’m always covered.
Clay: Personal use of the crushed ice machine. It’s a game-changer to have at home.
What artist(s) would you most like to work with and why?
Oh man, we could write a five-page list with artists we’d love to work with. At this point, we’d really love to work with any artist who allows us to make something weird, funny, abstract, and conceptual.
But just in case any of them are reading this… Childish Gambino, Tierra Whack, Viagra Boys, Thundercat, Mac DeMarco, Clairo, Amyl & The Sniffers, Danny Brown, Weezer, Young Miko, Teezo Touchdown, PinkPantheress, Paris Texas, Toro y Moi, and ATARASHII GAKKO!

How do you feel the promo industry has changed since you started in it?
Vertical video is evil, and it must be stopped.
Where do you see the music video industry being in five years’ time?
We’re manifesting that the lazy labels will start spending money on artist development again.
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know…
It’s always been our dream to dethrone Joey Chestnut as the reigning World Champion of Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. Our training has just begun.
