The charity sector's remit of reselling unwanted clothing for bargain prices has long been a natural winner for all on the high street - fast fashion gets a little slower, punters are able to look slick for less and a slice of cash goes to those in need.
Taking this age-old idea and repackaging it for the gaming market, Kirkens Korshær has launched Secondhand Skins, a digital thrift store that lets Counter-Strike 2 players donate unwanted in-game cosmetics for the charity to resell.
The initiative, developed pro bono by NORD alongside gaming unit NORD FTW, takes the same principle behind Kirkens Korshær’s 230-plus secondhand shops and applies it to virtual inventories, turning neglected skins into funds for vulnerable young people in Denmark. Players can simply send eligible CS2 skins through the campaign’s Steam trade link, after which Kirkens Korshær accepts and resells the items.
If that baffles you, don't worry - it's probably not for you anyway. However, for a bevvy of gamers, it’s a smart bit of digital recycling, giving unused assets a second life while proving that, even in the virtual world, one person’s unwanted clobber can still be another person’s helping hand.
