Considering This Is Spinal Tap, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, A Mighty Wind, and Bad News all sit in rarified status, the proposition of making a mock rockumentary might scare many a filmmaker off.
Thankfully, Marc Wootton and Misha Manson-Smith aren't most filmmakers.
Embracing the chaos, the duo have teamed with musician John Grant to create The Art of the Lie - a short, shot though Common People Films and replete with tracks from Grant, that dives headfirst into delusion, ego and identity with their trademark gonzo flair.
What began as a music video for Grant’s track It’s A Bitch quickly spiralled into something far more ambitious: a metafictional satire in which a failed director’s obsession with his subject leads him to 'become' the artist himself.
Held together by Wootton's unwavering performance and a cast of delightfully wide-eyed members of the public barely tolerating his antics, this 30-minute gem is chock-full of laughs.
