Not many bands would announce a comeback with a series of shorts that incorporate deadly choking, gruesome operations and trench-coat-wearing, moustachioed children. But not many bands are Tally Hall.

For the uninitiated, Tally Hall are a Michigan indie-rock outfit known for their genre-bending music, colour-coded ties and decidedly odd sense of humour. Having amassed a cult following that only grew during their 15-year hiatus, the band have now returned with a surprise reunion gig and four spectacularly surreal shorts.

Taking cues from Tally Hall's Internet Show, the band's absurdist web series from 2008, director Andrew Laurich (a university friend of the band who also appeared in their early videos) has reintroduced Rob, Zubin, Andrew and Ross in four films that lean heavily on the comedic filmmaker's talent for sinister surreality; a choice that took the subreddits by storm.

Time to get the neckwear out...

"Tally Hall is known, at least in part, for its colour-coded ties," explains band member Cantor. "So as we prepared to re-emerge from a 15-year hiatus, it seemed only fitting to mark the occasion with a series of shorts in which each of us reclaims his respective neckwear.

"In our years apart, we’ve each carved our own paths, with new careers, new families and new lives, and we wanted the videos to acknowledge those journeys. Zubin, for example, is a doctor now. Andrew is a shady individual who hangs around dark alleys.

"To bring the shorts to life, we teamed up with a second Andrew: director Andrew Laurich, a longtime friend and collaborator whose history with the band goes way back. With a shared sense of humour and a cinematic eye, he was the perfect person for the job."
