Produced by Riposte Pictures, Andy Lambert’s new AI-generated film The Oil Taker presents as a trailer for a driller chiller movie about a mythical creature busy nicking any kind of oil he can get his grabby hands on.
The film starts as creature-horror before mutating into a terrifying portrait of a world in the grip of a monster prepared to wage wars to control production of the black stuff.
Commenting on the use of AI in activist filmmaking, Lambert stated: “Making the film I got the sense that AI video has crossed a threshold where surreal political satire can now be produced with a level of cinematic realism and polish that previously required enormous budgets and production infrastructure. And at a speed fast enough to respond to current events in real time.
“It suggests AI video could spark a new form of editorial cartoons with the power to articulate and visualise a 'feeling' about politics within a cinematic language, rather than the disposable grammar of meme culture.”
