For many of us, giving someone or something the middle finger is a throwaway (albeit hopefully seldom) gesture, but that’s not the case for those with ALS.
The condition, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, strips people of muscle control and the ability to perform even the most basic physical movements, making the acts of defiance in this simple yet impactful spot from Fred & Farid Paris for ARSLA, France’s leading ALS organization, all the more important.
The 45-second film, Andy' finger for hope, directed by Hannah Rosselin through Positive Films, presents genuine sufferers performing the action either solo or with the help of loved ones and carers.
Adding to the impressive qualities of the film, the soundtrack was composed by influential French hip-hop producer Pone, who has lived with ALS for a decade and, unable to use his hands, generates music entirely through eye-tracking software.
