Highly textured and beautifully designed, Rosemarie’s Life is an animated feast for the eyes.
Rosemarie, who was born in 1930, grew up in the shadow of a global war. The short details her escape from Germany, her struggles to return to her fiancee, and how she reconnected with her family years later. With lush backgrounds and clothing that feels stitched on, the film is delightful to watch, with a wonderfully immersive puppets-meet-claymation style of animation and clever cuts to show the passage of time.
Using a more stylized, slower style of animation with fewer frames ROOF had more time to spend on the details. The 3D animation made an art piece out of all the elements, which included 22 environments and 45 characters. The piece was led by agency CRK and directed by Guto Terni. It is now being released with an English edit after the German-language version garnered a half million views.
The piece was heavily inspired by Rosemarie's photographs and keepsakes, and the level of immersion in the world is wonderfully deliberate. Seeing the reference photos compared to the final work is remarkable, and really adds a lot of weight to the hope that Rosemarie's story will continue to be told as a source of inspiration and a call to keep memories, and storytelling, alive.
