The Toranomon Advertising Festival takes place in Tokyo this week and one of the sessions will see a screening take place of a selection of winners from recent Young Director Award shows, which are supported by shots.

The screenings will take place from tomorrow, October 21st, and on the following two days, and will celebrate work from a global collective of talented young filmmakers from around the world. The program will feature a mix of student films and short films, the two formats that most often serve as a launchpad for young directors, and through which, says the YDA, many filmmakers make their first creative statements, experiment freely and begin to define their storytelling voice.

Founded nearly 30 years ago by the European Association of Producers, then headed by François Chilot, who remains the President of the YDA today, the event continues to serve as a platform that helps producers discover new voices while giving young filmmakers the recognition, visibility and confidence to take their first steps in the industry

One of the YDA’s key goals is to provide a truly global stage for emerging directors, ensuring that voices from different countries and cultures are represented. This diversity of creative perspectives, says the YDA, enriches storytelling and leads to more original, powerful work. Through international collaborations - including its partnership with ADFEST, one of Asia’s leading creative festivals - the YDA strives to connect continents and share its talent-driven philosophy with new regions.

With this screening in Tokyo, YDA hopes to inspire the Japanese creative community to champion young talent and strengthen the culture of discovery that fuels the future of filmmaking.

"By showcasing these works in Japan, the YDA hopes to encourage young directors to share their visions more widely - to submit their films to festivals and awards like YDA, and to take that bold step into the professional world," said Chilot. "Visibility is what transforms potential into opportunity, and the industry deeply needs the stories, courage and imagination that only new voices can bring. The YDA’s presence in Japan would not be possible without the essential support of Black Cat White Cat Music, YDA’s longstanding partner in Japan. Erik [Reiff, CCO]Seiya [Matsumiya, Producer] and Timo [Otsuki, Executive Producer], will open the first screening in Tokyo, and each has been a YDA jury member, so have experienced the award firsthand, and continue to share its spirit in Japan. Special thanks also go to Toboggan and Kaz Shinagawa for their valuable support."
