The APA and Cinelab Film + Digital proudly present the straight 8 shootout 2024, with additional support from shots, Warner Chappell Production Music, and MACHINESHOP.
This lively event welcomes everyone to witness an array of brave companies efforts; short films edited entirely in-camera on just one roll of super 8 film. Every film will be showcased, regardless of the outcome. The event will culminate in a live vote and trophy ceremony - an unmissable experience if you're in Cannes!

About the Challenge: Any creative company is invited to participate in the straight 8 shootout challenge: to create a 2.5-minute short film entirely in-camera on one cartridge of super 8mm film. Each shot must be taken in story order, with no retakes or editing. Visual effects, colouring, and titling must be done during the shoot, using the camera. Super 8 film does not record sound, so soundtracks are made 'blind' and must be original.
Entrants send their exposed but undeveloped film cartridges to Cinelab Film + Digital for processing and scanning. straight 8 then aligns each soundtrack with the first frame of the film. It's that simple.
