What’s the best music video you’ve seen recently and why?

Imagine choreographing not one song but a whole album while you tell a meta story about your band. Sounds complicated but Jungle - Volcano pulls it off. It’s one of those things that is so well executed, that watching the making of is as fun as watching the real thing.

What’s the first music video you remember being impressed by?

The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony. Richard Ashcroft’s sass bumping into everyone he met walking around was such a simple but striking thing to me, as a teenager.

And what’s your all-time favourite music video?

Daft Punk - Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem

I mean, it’s a whole visual album before visual albums were a thing. I remember watching Digital Love (the best track of that album IMO) and just thinking that was the coolest thing ever.

What other directors/artists do you look to for inspiration?

Melina Matsoukas, Hiro Murai, and Romain Gravas.

What are you listening to at the moment?

Bon Iver, Jungle, Gilberto Gil, Haim and every week Soulection, this incredible music show at Apple Music with a fairly trippy collage of tunes.

What’s your favourite bit of tech, whether for professional or personal use?

I am not too tech-y, but software-wise, Frame.io is my one essential. And I'm, of course, always poking around with the latest AI tools and learning what’s new.

What artist(s) would you most like to work with and why?

Imagine a studio session with St. Vincent, Bon Iver, Tyler the Creator, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra?

Where do you see the music video industry in five years’ time?

Hopefully making more visual albums. I mentioned Daft Punk’s but other examples that come to mind are Beyoncé’s Lemonade and Jungle’s Volcano. This one shows you can do incredible journeys without a huge production budget.

Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know

My most played artist is Enya. Shepperd Moons, from 1991, is the only thing that can make me instantly focus.
