What’s the best music video you’ve seen recently and why?

Giveon - Lie Again, one of those ‘wish I’d made that’ videos… I love the abstract twist and the fact it makes me question ‘how did they do it?’.

TBH that’s what I strive for in my own work, creative that’s authentic to the artist but has a lil edge/twist/graphic touch injected into it.

What’s the first music video you remember being impressed by?

Michael Jackson - Leave Me Alone. I could watch that on repeat… I’m still dreaming of the day I get to pay homage to it in a video.

What other directors/artists do you look to for inspiration?

I find inspiration in the most random places. I’m inspired by old school cartoons, film, comics and art. I love bold graphic art, so that could be the Thundercats title sequence or an old school Nike print ad.

I look at younger directors for motivation though. I’m inspired by the hustle, optimism and passion. They keep me on my toes, keep me in check. I pride myself on being young at heart and have never been as hungry. I continually want to push all areas of my visuals.

What are you listening to at the moment?

I recently bought a 1992 BMW E30… and have made it my goal to only listen to 90s music in it haha. So right now I’m revisiting my love of old school rave. I remember it being so fast and loud, but now it’s kinda relaxing and meditative. Liquid - Sweet Harmony is a personal favourite.

What’s your favourite bit of tech, whether for professional or personal use?

I started my career as a graphic designer and evolved into doing what I do now… so I still find myself living in Photoshop and After Effects, testing out ideas and quick comps.

What artist(s) would you most like to work with and why?

They say you should never meet your heroes right?! But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t dreaming of a Kanye vid… but again I love the new talent coming through and would love to work with anyone who wants to push things visually. I’m here for the ideas whatever the artist - let’s jam and make something iconic.

How do you feel the promo industry has changed since you started in it?

The promo industry is constantly evolving. If you think you’ve seen a trend, you’re probably already too late to it. I don’t think that will ever change and that’s why I love the medium.

Every promo I’ve worked on, whether it be shooting talent like J Hus, Koffee and Idris Elba or my son Bow for an MJ Cole video, I’ve enjoyed working with artists to embrace technology and push ideas and execution to new levels.

Where do you see the music video industry being in five years’ time?

I guess it’s obvious if I said in the metaverse or some NFT type vibe… But that’s where my kids are enjoying it now so that’s gotta be the future. I’m already starting to experiment with NFTs.

I hope that we continue to push things by using technology to elevate execution but also stay true to making the sickest of visuals to incredible music. Whatever the format.

Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know…

There was one point in my life where I truly thought I could be a garage MC…
