On My Radar: Leonardo Aponte
Consulate editor Leonardo Aponte laments the lack of shoehorns when visiting other people, believes silent films deserve more credit, and gets scared by the one thing it's hard to avoid, as he reveals what's on his creative radar.
What’s the most creative advertising idea you’ve seen recently?
Oreo Kintsugi. Just brilliant.
What website(s) do you use most regularly?
This isn't happiness is a design/art blog. I love aesthetics, and always find great work.
What’s the most recent piece of tech that you’ve bought?
I tend not to buy technology in my personal life because I use it so much for work. I got a folding bike for myself this Christmas.

What product could you not live without?
A shoehorn. Which makes taking my shoes off at people's houses almost unbearable.
What’s the best film you’ve seen over the last year?
The Count of Monte-Cristo, I love a good sword fight.
What film do you think everyone should have seen?
Silent film doesn't get the credit it deserves… Buster Keaton’s The General; Fritz Lang's Metropolis; Robert Wiene's The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

What’s your preferred social media platform?
Instagram is the one I use.
What’s your favourite TV show?
Slow Horses is so well written and executed. Seinfeld is always welcome.

What’s your favourite podcast?
Never got into it. I like the radio. Car Talk was great, Fresh Air, Freakonomics.
What have you been most inspired by recently?
There is an Australian film from 2018 called The Nightingale which is absolutely brutal and beautiful. Directed by Jennifer Kent it stars Aisling Franciosione who delivers one of the best performances I have seen in a very long time.

If you could only listen to one music artist from now on, who would it be?
Not sure I can answer that. It feels wrong just to consider it
If there was one thing you could change about the advertising industry, what would it be?
Bring budgets back.

Who or what has most influenced your career?
Chad Sipkin and Holle Singer. I assisted the two of them at Consulate, and it was an educational experience.
What scares you the most?
The news.
What makes you happiest?
Dinner with Jackie, a day at the pool, a night out with friends… work.
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people wouldn’t know.
I don't care for French fries.
