On My Radar: Erik Kockum
Erik Kockum, director of Snask and repped by Papaya Films, is unimpressed by advertising's recent creative efforts, but has a lot of time for Kneecap, and Erik Kessels, as he reveals what's on his creative radar.
What’s the most creative advertising idea you’ve seen recently?
Hmm, can’t say I’ve seen many recently. But one of my faves of all time is Mustaches, for the Buenos Aires independent film festival. Otherwise, right now, I guess it’s pretty creative of the fascists making everyone believe they don’t exist.

What website(s) do you use most regularly?
The Norwegian oil fund website. They have a counter where you can see how their money is increasing. Then I compare it to the decreasing level of happiness in Norway. I’m Swedish.
What’s the most recent piece of tech that you’ve bought?
A new vinyl player. It’s a piece of tech that helps me stay away from tech.
What product could you not live without?
My tennis racket.
What’s the best film you’ve seen over the last year?
Kneecap.
What film do you think everyone should have seen?
The Life Aquatic - the perfect blend of art direction, humour and drama. Inspired me to become a director. Or Idiocracy, to understand what we have become.
What’s your preferred social media platform?
Truth social – because I love the truth.
What’s your favourite TV show?
South Park - because they tell the truth.
What’s your favourite podcast?
History pods, just anyone of them that has an interesting episode. It’s always good to know where we all come from.
What have you been most inspired by recently?
Kneecap.
If you could only listen to one music artist from now on, who would it be?
Viagra Boys – perfect mix of contemporary and punk. They have humour, they don’t take themselves too seriously, and also used to make great music videos.
If there was one thing you could change about the advertising industry, what would it be?
Remove all the awards.
Who or what has most influenced your career?
Erik Kessels. KesselsKramer work back in the day, like the Hans Brinker hotel and more. And his art today. We actually kiss every time we meet. And they tell you you shouldn’t meet your heroes.

What scares you the most?
Erik Kessels.
What makes you happiest?
Lasagna.
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people wouldn’t know.
I have an alter ego that is called The Night Poet. He is a very deep-thinking philosopher that loves to talk a lot and sometimes even buy art (I discovered lately), even though he never remembers it the next day.
