What the most creative advertising idea you’ve seen recently?

Not much impresses me from a conceptual point of view these days, but I loved seeing Grace Jones in the recent Barclaycard number. Especially as it reminded me to pay off my balance and close the account.

What website(s) do you use most regularly?

I read the Guardian every day. Boring I know. I sort of trust it, especially to be cynical. It’s important to hold onto some sort of truth at the moment.

What’s the most recent piece of tech that you’ve bought?

I got an Apple Watch for Christmas. I’m very excited by it, but I’m not sure what to do with it, other than to remember to charge it!

What product could you not live without?

My fold up bike. Its all about the connected commuter! Most importantly it means I can avoid going on the Tube.

What’s the best film you’ve seen over the last year?

Dune. Its one of my favourite books, and I re-read it a few years ago. Although I also love the David Lynch version for its art direction, the Denis Villeneuve film feels like it is taken directly from my imagination.

What film do you think everyone should have seen?

Seven Samurai. It was the film that got me into film.

What’s your preferred social media platform?

I totally avoid social media. It makes me feel empty inside. I have no platforms installed.

What’s your favourite TV show?

Other than Succession? Hmmm... I really enjoy Police Interceptors, or Australian Border Force. They are perfect for an after work nap.

What’s your favourite podcast?

Something Rhymes With Purple.

What show/exhibition has most inspired you recently?

A Christmas Carol at the Old Vic. We go every year (apart from last year). It’s like a big red button that starts Christmas as a family.

What’s the most significant change you’ve witnessed in the industry since you started working in it?

The rise of the 'small players'. It’s a lot more democratic than it used to be.

If there was one thing you could change about the advertising industry, what would it be?

The crazy deadlines. They just get worse and worse.

Who or what has most influenced your career?

Andy Hunwick showed me a Flame machine when I was a runner, 25 years ago. That changed the course of my career. Otherwise I'd have become an editor (God forbid!).

Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know.

I was fluent in Nankinese/Mandarin in my youth.
