Gorgeously shot on 35mm film over four days, this cinematic short film, directed by PRETTYBIRD’s Loris Russier captures the story of semi-professional African-American surfer, Julian Williams.

Russier follows Williams’ journey into surfing against Hawaii’s breathtaking natural landscape – and the backdrop of racism that stained his experience growing up. Connecting with Williams’ past and present on a deep level, MAKAI moves through different chapters of his life, and documents the skill and perseverance that escalated his surfing career.

“In February 2023, I was introduced to this incredible surfer, Julian. Upon meeting him, I realised he definitely had a story that needed to be told – to highlight the substantial racism that an African American surfer can encounter and inspire young people of colour to pursue their passion for surfing.”
