Trust is at the heart of this new campaign for HSBC as big-wave surfer Matahi Drollet and jet-ski driver Tahurai Henry are called into action to surf the ‘wave of trust’.

Called We’re There, the campaign is created by VML London and directed by Kiku Ohe through Superprime, and the one-minute-forty-second spot features Drollet and Henry working together to conquer overwhelming swells which reach heights of over 25ft. Drawing on the pair's relationship, the film symbolises HSBC’s strategy, patience and deep understanding of risk to build the right conditions for customer success.

Shot on Tahiti’s renowned surf break, Teahupoʻo, during several high-risk wave breaks, the team collaborated with local Polynesian production company We Are Ora to draw on Teahupo’o’s local and specialist knowledge to capture the best possible wave conditions.

"Wave selection is everything," said Ohe. "You don’t just go because a wave appears. It takes patience, experience and judgement, and in 25-foot surf at Teahupo’o the consequences are very real. The biggest challenge was being ready when the right wave arrived, because that moment couldn’t be repeated, so I hand picked a crew I knew had the experience for that pressure and understood surfing.

"My job was to build enough coverage around that one live event without creating an unfocused mess of cameras. Every position had a purpose. Knowing when to go was another huge part of it. We spent months planning, then weeks tracking swells across the Southern Hemisphere - watching the energy, direction, lunar cycle and local winds. We prepared for everything we could, but ultimately we were still in the hands of the ocean."

“If heavy water and a volatile ocean teaches you one thing, it’s that nobody can take on giant waves alone," added Ryan McManus, Chief Creative Officer at VML UK. "You need a partner who helps you navigate the conditions. That's why this was such a powerful metaphor for HSBC. With over 160 years' experience, they know what it takes to realise opportunities in an ever-changing world."
