My shots Monday: Lights Out
With an hour’s darkness set to mark 100 years since the start of WW1, we look at some illuminating spots on shots.
Homes and businesses across the UK will switch off their lights at 10pm tonight to mark and commemorate 100 years since the beginning of the World War One.
Following a day of services and ceremonies across Europe to mark the milestone, the onus will turn to the millions at home and places of work to burn candles of reflection and respect for the day Britain declared war on Germany, 4 August 2014.
With the blackout in mind and under the theme of light, we’ve compiled a folder of spots which have illuminated shots.net in the past to promote a range of brands’ marketing campaigns.
This film is set in a city and shows what would happen if the light from various sources was to leak out and float around in liquid form. A mesmerising watch and cool concept makes it a nice way to begin our list of light-themed films from the shots archives.
The prominent light in Wieden+Kennedy’s campaign film for Nike Basketball is the strong spotlight which seeks out and shines down on some of the top stars from the NBA. Players such as LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Dirk Nowitzki and Amar’e Stoudemire all feature as the city dims down and their talent shines. The commercial is shot by Lance Acord and the campaign also saw a shorter commercial featuring James alone with the same theme present and a Frank Sinatra soundtrack.
A cinematic sequence of light comes courtesy of Philippe Andre next in his film for Philips that sees a series of lamps and lights illuminate across a city culminating in an impressive LED display on the side of a skyscraper. DDB Amsterdam is the agency behind the work which was created for the brand’s See What Light Can Do campaign.
A similar themed spot, this time for home furnishings giant IKEA, sees a host of lamps light up to promote the brand’s energy efficient light bulbs and the fact that by 2016 it will only sell the environmentally friendlier product. Mother is the agency behind the work and the director this time is Martin Krejci treating us to another night time journey, this time set in a forest in accordance with the environmental theme.
More recently, CHI London has been the agency to grace us with a piece of work themed on light at night, with its Lexus Strobe commercial. Set in Kuala Lumpur, the spot saw stuntmen and acrobats dress up in unique suits made of 1,680 LED lights and captured in different positions across the city to promote the car brand’s Amazing in Motion tagline. The impressive display is directed by Adam Berg.
Take a look at the videos in our Lights Out My shots folder here. Tonight’s blackout will take place between the hours of 10pm and 11pm GMT. Public bodies including the BBC have pledged to dim their lights for the duration, while landmarks including the Houses of Parliament, Blackpool Tower and the Imperial War Museum North in Manchester will switch off as part of the incentive.
