Cyclist Christos Sandalakis has never had a problem taking hairpin curves, and with a little help from Vodafone, he was able to do it on his own.
As a champion tandem cyclist, Sandalakis has won events all over the world. This time, for a solo speed run down a mountain, his tandem partner was in his ear, giving him real-time feedback over Vodafone’s 5G network. The stakes are high and the immediacy feels real, and that’s probably because in Cyclist Sandalakis was zooming along at a breezy 50 miles per hour.
Full of sentiment and relying on our fondness for underdog stories, director Harry Patramanis (rep'd by CoMPANY) never lets us think for a second that there’s anything Sandalakis can’t do. With support from Wunderman Thompson Athens, the agency lead, Patramanis took the time to get Sandalakis comfortable with the cameras. “It was essential to gain Christos’ trust and get him used to my cameras being so close,” says Patramanis. “ I spent some time at his home, filming him work through his day; waking up, training indoors, being with his bike, and then to the velodrome to work out with his tandem partner, Sotiris.”
I shot all the angles using ten cameras plus one drone. On the day of the shoot, Christos was able to do the route a few times, each time better than the first. He was so thrilled being by himself on the bike, he wanted it to last forever! It was a great joy to accomplish this project.”
