Late September, at the MakeUp Show, a major beauty trade event in Houston, Texas, a surprising new
skincare regimen made its debut: nuclear facials.

The offering highlighted clean nuclear energy as the latest essential in the beauty and skincare space and was unveiled at Skin’s Best Hope, a luxury pop-up spa from nuclear energy advocacy group Come Clean and creative agency Droga5, part of Accenture Song.

While promoting truly clean beauty, the nuclear facials at Skin’s Best Hope aim to spread awareness about the benefits of nuclear energy through skincare rituals that are a basic part of people’s routines. Environmental stressors promote premature aging, dark spots, inflammation, and even increased cancer risk. As a leading source of clean energy, nuclear energy can play a major role in combating these factors that affect skin health and beauty routines. The nuclear facials at Skin’s Best Hope replace the typical water used for steam during a facial with water vapour made from ultra-pure, nuclear power plant cooling water, as safe and emissions-free as the zero-pollution water vapour that comes out of nuclear cooling towers every day.

Alongside the unique source of water used for the steam, the nuclear facials were designed to deeply hydrate, detox, and refresh skin that’s been exposed to environmental stressors, offering a truly “clean energy” experience.

The Come Clean Coalition is a group of nonprofit and for-profit organisations working to raise awareness around the environmental and human benefits of nuclear energy.

Nuclear energy is currently the largest source of clean energy in America and will play an increasingly important part in the energy transition. Nuclear energy is valuable because, not only is it clean, it runs 24/7, even in extreme weather, and provides stable energy pricing. And, despite common misconceptions, nuclear energy is one of the safest and most regulated forms of power.

The pop-up was a collaboration between Droga5, Accenture Song Sustainability, and the Come Clean Coalition and executed with the help of Lime Media.

Droga5 Worldwide CCO Pelle Sjoenell said: “Beauty, skin and self-care regimens are a part of our everyday lives and are a huge part of pop culture. Nuclear facials, as absurd as they might sound now, help people connect the dots between their skin health and clean nuclear energy. We were excited to translate something that might be abstract and unknown to people into something personal, approachable and luxurious. Now please excuse me while I go and get my pores cleaned.”

Asia Kai, aka “The Skincare Boss” and Skin’s Best Hope esthetician added: “Clean air means cleaner skin. There are only so many products we can use. If our air is dirty, our skin is too.” Ore Otu, beauty influencer and MakeUp Show Attendee: “Pollution is making us wrinkly! I had never thought about this. Now I’m thinking what if [nuclear energy] was everywhere and our air was clean.”

Diem Ho, MakUp Show Attendee adds: “I didn’t know nuclear energy was clean until today. I’m going to tell my friends about this."
