The development of 3D/ 360 / virtual reality filmmaking has been a hot topic for a couple of years now, but the focus is almost always on the technology and techniques of the visuals. However, it’s not just your peepers that need to be fooled for full immersion, so clever audio folk have been making similar advances in the way that audio is captured and engineered in 3D in order to provide an absorbing experience.

We were fascinated by the process and its application so, after a LENGTHY chat in Cannes in which we fully exercised our geek muscles, we caught up with GCRS’s Steve Lane in their Soho-based studio to chat about 3D sound and binaural recording.

PRO TIP – This interview is recorded with binaural microphones, so listening with headphones is STRONGLY advised to get the full impact.
