Pillows, not survival. That’s what childhood battles should look like. But for one in five children, the reality is different. They grow up in, or are directly affected by war.

Directed by Elias Ben Dahhou, shot by Konrad Losch, and produced by Simon & Paul, the spot Pillow Fight draws a sharp contrast between the imagined violence of play and the real violence of conflict.

It opens in a world we all recognise: children running, laughing, diving into cushions, before slowly slipping into something else. The film rejects chaos in favour of stillness. There are no explosions, just a slow, observational drift into the reality millions of children face. The result is unsettling without being loud, an emotional rupture framed in calm.

As conflicts increase and escalate, so does our detachment. Pillow Fight doesn’t raise its voice, it makes space. It invites us to remember what’s at stake: the right to a childhood defined by joy, and safety, not by survival.

Pillow Fight was recently awarded Silver at the Young Director Award 2025 in Cannes.
