We spoke with the MindsEye director James Larese about classic music videos, daily musical inspirations and a regret about The Rolling Stones...
What’s the best music video you’ve seen recently and why?
Dio - The Last in Line, because this is what it looks like inside my head. I watch this video three or four times a month lol.

What other directors/artists do you look to for inspiration?
I love being able to shape shift to an artist’s aesthetic… My inspiration comes from waking up to new music in my inbox to write on. Some is better than others obviously but everyday is a different creative path based on whose music it is.
What are you listening to at the moment?
I’m on a Jame's Gang trip currently. Pre-Eagles Joe Walsh is legendary.
What’s your favourite bit of tech, whether for professional or personal use?
I’m extremely late to the party on this but I just started going deep with an iPad and pencil. My inner 8 year old’s mind is blown.

What artist(s) would you most like to work with and why?
I would have loved to have done a big performance video for The Rolling Stones before Charlie’s passing.
How do you feel the promo industry has changed since you started in it?
All digital everything. Including mentally. Not better or worse just different. Film and all that shooting on film entailed was a beautiful process but we had to be so precious with coverage. Digital is consumer friendly so there are no divides of who can or can’t shoot something which is awesome. The process isn’t as romantic as film but you can shoot forever which allows for more visual depth and range with coverage.

Where do you see the music video industry being in five years’ time?
Videos are the “little engine that could” in the film world so as long as there is music, there will be videos. They are steady, creative and only getting bigger and more in demand with the amount of content in the world.
I’ve done a lot of “brand direct/ artist sponsored” hybrid projects that never existed 5 years ago so I’m sure in five years there will be an even stronger art/commerce integration.
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know…
People trip out when they hear I’m a grandfather :)
