What's the best music video you've seen recently, and why?

Aespa – Drama. Imagine Sin City meets Kill Bill. I love this kind of noir style videos being introduced into pop culture, and especially in K-pop.

What's the first music video you remember being impressed by?

The Cardigans - My Favourite Game. My anxiety levels went through the roof with this music video; I still have no idea who thought the lead singer could commit suicide by setting a stone into the pedal, and surprise surviving the crashed and getting killed by the stone.

I love the irony, the motion, and the excitement. The 90s were another level for the music video industry.

And what's your all-time favourite music video?

Now we are getting to the new stuff, my new obsession. I've been very into K-pop since 2016. My favourite music video is Blackpink - How You Like That.

It's a wholesome promo that lasts just over three minutes. They can do whatever they want, they have the best visuals, they can dance, rap, and sing, and their outfits are always on point. They are beautiful, and they have so much talent. I am glad to call myself a BLINK!

What other directors/artists do you look to for inspiration?

The Canadian filmmaker and actor Xavier Dolan. I hope he never stops making films. Period.

What are you listening to at the moment?

I used to live in Australia and got into Australian sync-pop music. The presets, cut copy, Pnau, Empire of the Sun, etc.

Pnau and Empire of the Sun recently launched a new video made with AI; it's pretty cool and goes very well with their brand and this futuristic look they are known for.

What's your favourite bit of tech for professional or personal use?

I bought my headphones last January. The Apple AirPods Max is a revelation. I love them so much. My life changed completely.

What artist(s) would you like to work with and why?

Blackpink, Jungle, the books, Roosevelt and BadBadNotGood.

How do you feel the promo industry has changed since you started?

I saw Blackpink live from Seoul for the last concert on a paid live online concert. They are the final show of their tour. I'm happy with where the industry is moving. The audience now get to be part of events/shows/films that you couldn't before.

Where do you see the music video industry being in five years?

Looking ahead, the music video landscape in the next five years will continue to be shaped significantly by the enduring influence of YouTube and TikTok. YouTube, maintaining its stature as a global platform, will serve as a pivotal space for artists to showcase their work. Simultaneously, TikTok's burgeoning impact will persist, driving trends and propelling emerging artists into the limelight.

Collaborative efforts between artists and content creators will strengthen, blurring the conventional boundaries of music videos. As technology advances, the industry is poised for ongoing transformation, emphasising the need for adaptability amidst an ever-evolving digital landscape.

Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won't know…

I'm part of many K-pop online groups where we have to stream our favourite music videos. The reason why the K-pop videos have billions of views is because, secretly, the fandom select one video a day to stream non-stop to grow the views. Crazy maybe? But I don't care! Let's get all Blackpink videos to one billion views.
