Matt Houghton joins Spindle
The BAFTA-winning director joins the team at Spindle for representation.
Director Matt Houghton makes work that moves people.
Known for challenging convention, he crafts films that transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. From intimate portraits to sprawling archive films, artfully-curated stories to glimpses of humanity, his textured visual approach brings truth to every frame.
Houghton's film This is Endometriosis recently won the 2026 BAFTA for Best British Short Film. Created in collaboration with the film’s protagonist, it tells the deeply personal story of Georgie Wileman’s brutal experience living with endometriosis, told with a blend of family archive, self-documented photographs, observational footage and a collection of highly striking reconstructive memories.
This latest success follows a string of highly-acclaimed work. His multi-award-winning film Landline won the Grierson Award for Best Documentary Short and his first short Dear Araucaria, made in partnership with the Guardian, won the Audience Award at Sheffield Doc/Fest. Earth To Cop used found-footage to create an eyewitness portrait of climate change and played at the COP26 opening ceremony before being honoured as one of Vimeo's Best Of The Year.
Houghton’s sensitive, thoughtful approach translates directly to his commercial work where he has been nominated and awarded at the British Arrows, Webby Awards, Kinsale Sharks, 1.4 Awards and selected as part of Vimeo's coveted Top Ten Best Of The Year twice.
Whether in film or advertising, Houghton has an eye for the details that matter. With an organic visual approach, he seeks out projects with soul, effortlessly connecting with his collaborators and subjects to create work with intimacy and integrity.
On signing to Spindle, Houghton said: "I’ve been an admirer of the work coming out of Spindle since the very early days and as I’ve come to know everyone there, I’ve been equally drawn to the ethos of the company and the way the team work. To be on a roster with such a talented collection of filmmakers is an exciting step. I can’t wait to see what we can create together."
Spindle MD / EP / Partner Stitch Richardson adds: We’ve been a huge fan of Matt for many years, and we knew we wanted to work with him the moment we met. He’s one of those rare filmmakers whose work feels both meticulous and instinctive at the same time. Highly crafted but honest and authentic to the subject matter. It’s an incredibly difficult line to walk but he does it with calm confidence.
