As faithful members of the Commonwealth, The Salmon is honoured—yes, with a “u”—to welcome Australian director Fiona McGee to its growing roster.

Specialising in visually driven, nuanced comedy/performance work, McGee’s work captures the essence of real life, in all its glorious awkwardness.

McGee has directed creative and quirky campaigns for some of the world’s biggest brands, including McDonald’s and Volkswagen, and comically insightful campaigns for the likes of TurboTax, CarGurus and Colorsteel. Her worlds are crafted with a visual nuance that acts as the perfect chaser to the shot of her humbling sense of humour. Again, with a “u.”

“We love Fiona’s deft touch in poking the soft underbelly of the human experience, which is a fancy way of saying she’s great at making things feel real and really awkward,” said Adam, of comedy directorial duo Adam & Dave, who co-founded The Salmon in 2022.

“Fiona has a remarkable ability to make us laugh at the weird ways we all feel deep down inside but are too afraid to admit to others,” adds Dave. “Her comedy is like a therapy session without the uncomfortable silences where you think your therapist is secretly judging you. Her work is therapeutic, but at a much more competitive rate.”

Before advertising, McGee studied at Sydney’s College of Fine Arts and began making shorts and documentaries, both of which shape her authentic and striking visual style. After attending Australia’s acclaimed AWARD School, she worked on the agency side and started directing commercials, refining the concept down to its core truth, then building her approach. Her storytelling, which spans comedy and drama, narrative and documentary, is defined by a deep understanding of humanity.
