Cannes 2014 Roundup 2 - The YDA

One of the highlights of the Cannes calendar is the annual YDA (Young Director Award), and 2014's event was no disappointment. CFP-E President François Chilot welcomed over 1000 industry attendees, with the award show seeing 84 fresh-faced directors jet in to pick up the prestigious trophy.
Achieving both the Special Jury Award and Audience Award was Nexus' Kibwe Tavares, whose visually-stimulating film 'Jonah' elicited gasps from the audience. Other winners included a few faces formerly showcased at our 'Presents' screening nights: Park Village/Able&Baker's Remy Cayuela with 'Afterglow', PRETTYBIRD's Ian & Cooper with 'Back to Me' and 'Fortunes, an experimental comedy' from Greg Barth.
Speaking of the show, François was keen to stress, "The level of work in terms of craft as well as fresh ideas gets higher and higher and it's wonderful to see that the awards have become the leading international showcase for new directing talent. The winners are not only natural born storytellers with fresh original visual voices but so many are also experts doing their own editing, special effects and post. This genre is the future of film making."
