The last dictator standing has no one to join him in this Nando's spot.

The South African ad industry turned out in force in Cape Town last weekend to celebrate their best work at the 34th Annual Loerie Awards. The Loeries honor work produced not just in South Africa, but throughout the rest of Africa and the Middle East as well.  A full listing of Loeries winners in all categories can be found here.

This year, four Grands Prix were awarded in a variety of categories. The Grand Prix for TV & Cinema Commercials went to the Nando's "Last Dictator Standing" spot for Nando's, produced by the production company Bouffant for agency Black River FC and directed by Dean Blumberg.  The spot was also honored in the TV Craft category with Certificates for Direction and Best Use of Licensed Music.

It was also a big year for Velocity, the Johannesburg and Cape Town production house.  The company picked up a total of 17 awards across the board, including three Golds awarded to work directed by Greg Gray.  In all, spots he shot brought in nine honors in total.

Additional Velocity directors whose work was recognized include Keith Rose, Anton Visser, Ryan Isted and Tristyn Von Berg, as well as Zwelethu Radebe of Velocity Afrika.

Velocity's "Masters" spot for Oudemeester won a Gold for director Greg Gray.

Gray's Gold winners include Oudemeester "To The Masters," Eskom 49M's "Be The Difference" and First National Bank's "Dog, while Rose directed the Allan Gray spot titled "Time Flies," which scooped up three awards, including a Silver. In addition, "The Masters" won two Bronze, including one in the Campaign category

Velocity highlights include two TV Craft Golds in Direction and Cinematography for "The Masters," a Craft Gold in Cinematography for "Dog," Silvers for Organ Donor Foundation's "Leila," a Silver and a Bronze for Ster-Kinekor's "Thato" and Bronze honors for Stimorol's "I Believe I Can Fly" and Vodacom's "Out Of This World."

"This year we received 3182 entries, a big increase on 2011's figure of 2 870," says Loeries CEO Andrew Human. "I've always said that the Loeries serves as a barometer of the economy. If you look at 2008, that was the height of the global economic boom. By the following year the recession was in full swing and the Loeries experienced a significant drop in entries. Now we're on the rise again, hopefully in line with the world's economic recovery."

The Loeries Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to John Hunt, Worldwide Creative Director, TBWA\ Worldwide, for his outstanding contribution to the South African and global advertising industry over the course of his career.
