London's ad industry turned out yesterday, Sept. 6 at the National History Museum to celebrate the Advertising Producers Association's 2012 edition of the APA Collection, the annual compendium of the best commercials of the year from UK agencies and production houses, selected by top creatives, producers and directors.  For a full list of APA Collective spots, with complete credits, click here. Among the top production houses, as represented by the 45 spots in the APA Collection, were Academy Films, which placed six spots on the list, including work for Durex ("Vinyl"), directed by Si & Ad for Euro RSCG; Halford's "The Trip," directed by Fredrich Planchon for Dare; Hovis' "Farmer's Lad," directed by Seb Edwards for Dare; NSPCC's "The $#*! Kids Say," directed by Amanda Boyle for Inferno; Thomson Holidays' "Quality Time," directed by Martin De Thurah for Beattie McGuiness; and Thinkbox's "Harvey & Rabbit," directed by Si & Ad for The Red Brick Road.

Rattling Stick placed five spots in the Collective. Its' list included the Barnardos "Life Story" spot, directed by Ringan Ledwidge for BBH; John Lewis' "Through the Ages," directed by Ledwidge for Adam & Eve; Specsavers' "Sauna," directed by Daniel Kleinman for Specsavers' in-house agency; The Guardian's "Three Little Pigs," directed by Ledwidge for BBH; and Wall's Sausage Rolls' "Garage," directed by Andy McLeod for Saatchi & Saatchi.

Other multiply honored production houses included Blink, which placed three spots on the APA Collection list, as did Hungry Man and Smuggler.  Pulse Films, Biscuit Filmworks UK and Moxie Pictures all had two spots on the list.

Prominent directors in the Collection, in addition to Rattling Stick's Ledwidge, who topped the list with three spots, included Academy's Si & Ad, Biscuit's Tim Godsall and Blinks' Dougal Wilson, all of whom directed two of the honored spots.  In addition, Director Neil Gorringe directed two spots, one through Moxie Pictures and one through Channel 4.

The APA Collection Young Director Award went to Karen Cunningham of Pop-Up Films for "The Light is Your Friend," produced for BETC Paris and edited by Max Windows of Stich.

Amongst ad agencies, BBH was the dominant shop, having created a dozen of the Collective's spots. In addition to spots for Barnardo's and The Guardian, the agency was represented with work for Audi, Axe, Barclays, British Airways, Weetabix and Yeo Valley.  Other agencies to place multiple spots on the Collective list included Wieden + Kennedy and Adam & Eve, both with three, and DDB, Saatchi & Saatchi, AMVBBDO and Euro RSCG with two each.

Work Post dominated the list of editorial houses, having cut eight of the spots, with six of those being edited by Rich Orrick. In addition to cutting Ledwidge's spots for Barnardo's and The Guardian, he collaborated with the director on the John Lewis "Through the Ages" spot for Adam & Eve; with Biscuit director Tim Godsall on two Axe spots for BBH; and with Hungry Man's Tim Bullock on a spot for Foster's titled "Lucy," also created by Adam & Eve.

Other top editorial houses included Final Cut and The Whitehouse, both of which edited six of the Collection spots; Stitch, which cut five; and Assembly Rooms and Marshall Street, which cut four.

Final Cut's Joe Guest edited four of the APA spots: he collaborated twice with Blink's Dougal Wilson, on spots for Lurpak ("Rainbow") out of W+K and the John Lewis holiday favorite "The Long Wait," out of Adam & Eve. He also cut Frank Todaro's Weetabix spot "Dad's Big Day," produced by Moxie Pictures for BBH, as well as Channel 4's "Street Summer," directed by Neil Gorringe.

Rattling Stick's Ringan Ledwidge directed "Through the Ages" for John Lewis.

Other editors whose work was represented multiple times included Adam Marshall of The Whitehouse, Adam Spivey of The Playroom, Andy McGraw of Stich, Leo Scott of Speade, Paul Hardcastle of Trim Editing and Sam Rice Edwards of Assembly Rooms.

This year's APA Collection received over 400 entries. The ads that made the final cut will, after their debut in London, travel to select cities around the world. SourceEcreative is a co-sponsor of the event this year.
