If we were betting men at shots, we'd put money on the fact that, come June, every bookie in town will be asking people to wager on who's going to win the World Cup.
But online betting brand bwin is kicking off the summer footie fever a month earlier, with the launch of a new ad campaign which asks you to bet on who stole the World Cup. The suspects? Four of the biggest football legends of all time.
Created by BBH Sport and directed by Pedro Martin-Calero through Blink, the ad is a souped-up heist that nods to the Hollywood crime capers of yore, and stars Cafu, Vicente del Bosque, Stefan Effenberg and Diego Maradona as criminals representing their respective countries, who are all plotting to steal the World Cup. The action opens on the crime scene, in the aftermath of an explosion that has knocked out the guests at a glamorous reception, and shattered the glass cabinet holding the iconic gold trophy, which has now mysteriously disappeared... The action then shifts to the various suspects, who all describe their ways and means of half-inching the prize.
A follow-up to last year’s interactive offering, The Race [below] where viewers were prompted to back either the black or the yellow car in a fast-paced street race, this new film similarly allows viewers to 'live the action' and bet on the outcome of the ad.
Running throughout Germany, Austria, Greece, Spain, Italy, France, UK, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden, the campaign will be accompanied by a series of behind-the-scenes interviews by Robert Pires talking to each footballing legend, which promise some 'explosive' revelations, including Maradona’s take on video assistant referees (VAR) and what would have happened if it was in-play today.
