If you felt particularly blue yesterday, it wasn’t just because it was the end of your weekend and the start of your typical working week.

No, yesterday was Blue Monday, a date that’s claimed to be the most depressing day within the year. Although the end of the weekend might have also had something to do with it.

You may have been fooled by the media coverage it received, which offered tips on staying upbeat and not falling under the energy-sucking spell of winter. But for all those teetering on the edge, JWT provided a pragmatic solution to avoid the blues associated with this time of year by taking to the streets of London and handing strangers bacon baps.

The aim of the campaign? To turn Blue Monday into Bacon Monday. Because apart from vegetarians, who doesn’t love a bacon sarnie? (The agency even thought to include vegetarian options in their breakfast delivery for non-meat eaters.)

The stunt was activated through hotel chain, Holiday Inn Express, following a survey they did which revealed customers enjoyed their stay more if bacon was added as an option at breakfast.

Travelling in a Baconmobile, cynical Londoners couldn’t believe their eyes when they received the free baps. One guy even asked incredulously, “What’s the catch?”

Following the success of the stunt and the survey, Holiday Inn Express now offers bacon in its Express Start breakfasts.

“We knew that having bacon on the breakfast menu had made Holiday Inn Express’ guests really happy,” says JWT’s ECD Lucas Peon. “So on the bluest day of the year we thought what better way to provide a little pick me up to London’s commuters first thing on a rainy, grey morning than a free bacon bap and a little comedy. After all, Holiday Inn Express is the brand that knows what matters. And starting your day right matters.”

So with that in mind, ignore the weather, seize the day and get some bacon sizzling first thing in the morning.
