Matthew McConaughey has not had the best year. The McConaissance ended ignomiously with a high-profile flop (The Dark Tower) and a flop that pretty much everyone has forgotten (Free State of Jones). On top of this, his sole successful film of the year, Sing, saw him playing a koala singing Call Me Maybe. With a year like that, anyone would be reaching for the bourbon.

Luckily, McConaughey is creative director for Wild Turkey Bourbon. As part of this role, he has just created his second ad for JWT New York for the alcohol brand, following his directorial debut for them in September 2016. In the new ad, produced by RSA Films and titled Sang Our Song, he delivers a signature laconic monologue beginning 'we didn't set out to make a hit', which has a particular resonance after The Dark Tower.

The new ad then continues with music from Davie, hand-selected by McConaughey [pictured above right] to soundtrack the new campaign. Speaking of the ad, McConaughey said, “this new TV spot demonstrates the cool ease and authenticity of this brand,” said McConaughey. “I met Wild Turkey’s Master Distillers Jimmy and Eddie Russell years ago, and I immediately knew something was special about this brand – they’re not afraid to do things the right way, even if that’s not the easiest way, never changing the formula to follow consumer trends. And if you live your life with the same principles, Wild Turkey will find you.”
