Horror film fans were in for a treat this morning in Sydney when they woke up to red balloons tied to drains.

While some were confused about the significance of the red balloons, others twigged its connection to this week’s release of thriller It, based on Stephen King’s 1986 novel under the same title.

In the film, a killer clown descends upon the town of Pennywise, using red balloons to warn people when he’s close and lure children to him.

Monday morning commuters were freaked out and frantically tweeting online about their confrontations with the balloons, which bore little explanation about the campaign other than the words ‘It is closer than you think.’ Although film fans seemed to appreciate the stunt (below).

It will be internationally released this Thursday (Sept 7), so if you see any red balloons in your city after this release date, we can’t guarantee that they’re connected to the film… best avoid them at all costs.
