German supermarket Edeka has taken drastic measures to take a stand against racism and emptied its shelves of foreign products.

The in-store activation took place in the Hamburg branch, where products were removed off shelves and replaced with signs that read, 'So empty is a shelf without foreigners;’ and ‘This shelf is pretty boring without diversity.’

While some local products remained, the bulk of the shop was barren, making it hard for Germans to complete their usual shop.

The aim of the campaign was to raise awareness of diversity by demonstrating how much we rely on multi-culturalism in our daily lives.

However it was met with mixed reactions, not least because Germany is expecting federal elections next month and the political climate is currently pretty tense.

“Edeka stands for variety and diversity,” said a company spokeswoman, later adding, “But only together with products from other countries it is possible to create the unique variety, that our consumers value.”

Point proven, we think!
