2016 was the year that the world, as we knew it, changed. Thankfully, London-based agency mcgarrybowen managed to poke fun at the sorry situation, unveiling a competition in which the Guardian’s readers could win a box of Brexit-inspired Christmas crackers.

The Victoria & Albert Musuem has chosen to include these iconic crackers in its permanent collection, where they will sit alongside other historic crackers.

Other artefacts on display include crackers that date back as far as 1927 (below), inspired by the man who invented the original product, Tom Smith.

“These crackers have really captured the mood of Brexit,” says mcgarrybowen ECD, Angus Macadam. “It’s an honour to have an institution like the V&A take such an interest”.

The crackers featured prizes to reflect the current mood in the UK, such as a yo-yoing pound, a bus that promises to fund the NHS just as Farage did (below) and jokes that mock our current system.
