On My Radar: Mick Mahoney
Ogilvy & Mather London's CCO on calling Sweden, taming horses and being inspired by the people around him.
What’s the best ad campaign you’ve seen recently?
Not sure that it’s an ad campaign. It is a brilliant idea though. Barking but brilliant. The Swedish number. Give it a go. +46771793336. Some random Swede will answer and chat about anything you might want to know about Sweden. Tells me better than an ad ever could just how awesome Sweden must be if everyone that lives there wants to tell strangers about it.
What website(s) do you use most regularly and why?
Pinterest. I’m on it the whole time it’s a great way to write a casting brief, set a tone of voice, etc. (words are so open to misinterpretation) and generally magpie ideas for all kinds of things. This has saved me a fortune on interiors and motorbike magazines.
What’s the most recent piece of tech that you’ve bought and why?
I’m looking for a new camera at the moment. So hopefully by the time you read this the answer will be a Leica M. I’ve always been fascinated by photography, particularly fashion. I haven’t really found a camera I’ve enjoyed using since my F5. Digital makes everything so much easier, and the control it gives you is great but I miss using film. And printing which is such a tactile way to express your ideas. I plan to start producing more physical images instead of leaving them sitting on hard drives gathering digital dust.
What’s the last item – tech or otherwise – you bought that genuinely improved your life?
A Myler bit which is a brilliant piece of design. My horse, Blue, is now much happier and has stopped trying to bury me. It’s time the tech revolution hit the equestrian world.
Facebook, Instagram or Twitter?
Twitter. I use it as a news feed and check it two or three times a day for updates on various subjects of interest - technology and horse racing mostly. I’m quite reserved, so not great at contributing to it though.
What’s your favourite app on your phone and why?
Racing Post. This is a brilliant app and so well thought through. It’s literally a one stop shop for racing fans. News, live updates, form, historical form, bloodlines, live streamed races, betting. Apps have transformed in-play and general sports related betting.
What’s your favourite TV show and why?
Trapped, the Icelandic thriller which was on BBC 4 recently. It was wonderfully bleak and slow. I’m generally enjoying the upswing in quality TV drama in recent years.
What film do you think everyone should have seen?
The Big Short. If you don’t really understand why the world has been in such deep trouble for the last eight years watch it. Then you will. And you’ll want to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Greed really isn’t good.
Where were you when inspiration last struck?
I’m an avid watcher of human behaviour. I find people endlessly inspiring, so inspiration usually strikes when I’m around others.
