On My Radar: Kenji Yamashita

Multi-talented Kenji Yamashita is a director, creative and art director at LOGAN.

Currently living in New York, Yamashita has built up his portfolio working with high-profile clients including Budweiser, the NIKE Fuelband and beauty brands MAC and NARS.

Here, he talks to shots about what gadgets facilitate his work and his latest interest in VR.

What’s the best ad campaign you’ve seen recently?

What website(s) do you use most regularly and why?

I like using Pinterest. It’s easy to collect images to create mood boards and share them with my design team.  

What’s the most recent piece of tech that you’ve bought and why?

GoPros and 360 rigs, because I am very interested in virtual reality. 

Facebook, Instagram or Twitter?

Facebook and Instagram.

What’s your favorite app on your phone and why?

My favorite app is Monument Valley at this moment. It’s simple, well designed, and fun to play.

What’s your favorite TV show and why?

Don’t laugh, but I love House Hunters on HGTV. It makes me feel so peaceful and helps me forget my worries.

What film do you think everyone should have seen?

That’s a tough question! For this year, I’d have to say Mad Max!

Where were you when inspiration last struck?

I was in Maui. I just felt like I was on the different planet. Natural beauty is something that we can’t emulate easily and I really appreciate it.

What’s the most significant change you’ve witnessed in the industry since you started working in it? 

Watching the industry adapt to multiple-media platforms.  

If there was one thing you could change about the advertising industry, what would it be?

I hope the advertising industry continues adding more entertainment value to its content so people feel engaged watching it.

What or who has most influenced your career and why?

Throughout my career, I’ve learned that developing a strong concept is the most important aspect of visual storytelling.
