Prime Minister David Cameron is set to make his final plea to Scottish voters today ahead of Thursday’s referendum that will see the nation decide on its fate as an independent nation.

The campaign has so far has seen celebrities including footballer David Beckham and fashion designer Vivienne Westwood have their say in a debate that has prompted split opinion with the vote currently too close to call.

With Scottish first Minister Alex Salmond leading the campaign for the Yes vote in favour of the split and just a few days remaining before the outcome is revealed, here we round up a selection of bold spots that fly the flag for freedom and people power to whet your appetite for the imminent result.

Talking Twickenham

David Beckham’s plea to the Scottish nation has seen the star reflect back to fond memories of helping the UK to host the Olympic Games two years ago and athletes from both sides of the border triumphed with Jess Ennis and Mo Farah taking gold, alongside Chris Hoy and Andy Murray for the UK. This spirited spot announces ticket sales for another sporting spectacle to be hosted on home shores next year, the Rugby World Cup. Actor Charles Dance captures the attention of players and fans alike to motivate minds ahead of the competition. Created by BBH Sport and shot by The Full Monty director Peter Cattaneo, the film promotes the idea of bringing the nation together.

No man’s land

Braveheart meets the battle of the sexes as a group of warlike men face down a similar group of women across a muddy field in this spot from BBH and Traktor. If you’ve been keeping abreast of all the news media vox pops themed on this week’s referendum the contrasting and heated opinion has painted a similar picture and it’s impossible to tell which way the vote will swing come Thursday. The chaotic spot was created to promote The Mail on Sunday’s supplement.

Part of the furniture

In another spot to champion people power and dramatise the classic battle scene from Braveheart, director Hamish Rothwell and agency The Monkeys presents an army of consumers brandishing IKEA products in the place of weapons as they attack in the name of being house proud. Surging from the countryside towards their homes, they show that power in numbers can make a difference when they unite to ‘fight boring’ together.

Setting up camp

Creative agency Fuel Lisboa continues the Braveheart theme by turning one of the most iconic scenes from the film world on its head by injecting a whole lot of colourful campness into a spot to promote the Queer Lisboa festival 2013.

Pau de la Sierra is the director to capture the unique motivational speech with added humour and there’s no doubt we’ll be seeing similar rally cries before Thursday’s decision to decide Scotland’s fate.

Turning the tables

We’ve heard arguments for and against the Yes vote but there is, of course, a percentage that is still undecided about what they believe is best for Scotland’s future. BBH and Rattling Stick’s Andy McLeod are behind this amusing spot for Mentos that sees the protagonist bid to back the favourite in a battle between humans and an alien species. But who can call the favourite in a referendum for independence? Only time will tell which way the pendulum swings.
